Drop-Off vs. Full-Service Catering: Which Does Your Event Need?

Quick answer
Drop-off is best when the food supports the event, like a meeting or training.
Full-service is best when the food is part of the experience, like a party or gala.

The first thing we ask most clients isn't about the menu. It's about the event. Who's coming? How long will they stay? What does the food need to do?
Those answers usually decide between drop-off and full-service catering. And that choice shapes your budget more than any single dish.

What's the difference?
Drop-off catering shows up ready to serve. We deliver it, set it out in trays and leave. Your team handles the rest, like refills and cleanup.
Full-service catering comes with a team. Our staff set up, serve, refill, keep things on time and clean up after. Based on the event, that can include plated meals, food stations, passed snacks, rentals and a bar.
How do they compare?
Drop-off | Full-service | |
|---|---|---|
Staff on site | None | Servers, captain, bartenders as needed |
Setup and cleanup | Your team | Our team |
Service styles | Buffet trays, boxed meals | Buffet, plated, stations, passed |
Notice needed in December | About 4–5 weeks | About 10–14 weeks for top dates |
Best for | Meetings, trainings, casual lunches | Parties, receptions, client events, galas |
Cost | Lower | Higher, based on staff and rentals |
When should I choose drop-off?
Choose drop-off when the food supports the event but isn't the main thing:
A working lunch or all-hands meeting
A training day or new-hire session
A team lunch where people eat and get back to work
Regular office meals, where being on time matters more than looks
It's also the better pick when time is short. It needs far less notice than a staffed event. Orders placed less than 48 hours ahead carry a rush fee.
When is full-service worth the cost?
Choose full-service when the experience is part of the point:
Holiday parties and year-end events
Client events, where the service reflects on your company
Receptions, galas and fundraisers
Events with alcohol, which usually need licensed bar staff
Any event where your hosts should be with guests, not refilling the buffet
Here's the hidden cost of drop-off at a big event: your own people. If three coordinators spend the night refilling trays, they aren't hosting.
How do I decide?
We offer both drop-off and full-service catering, with separate menus for each. We serve Seattle, Tacoma, Bellevue and the Puget Sound area. Share your headcount, date and the kind of event you're planning. We'll suggest the style that fits.
